In our modern age of sport, where the science of sport is at a high and increasing level, what factors, when applied correctly, can lead participating athletes to peak athletic performance? Are there any secrets to athletic excellence? Are these factors easy to manipulate for the benefit of athletes? This article discusses the factors that can lead athletes and coaches to achieve peak performance in a sport.

Peak Performance

There are many articles and books detailing the principles, programs, success factors, etc. which can lead to peak performance in sports. Several authors have written about them at length, and in many ways the principles and factors are universal. The principles of progressive resistance, variety, goal-specific training, recovery, etc. are all indisputable fundamental reasons that allow athletes to achieve peak performance in sport. This article goes further by exploring these aggregate factors in a different light. In the process, I hope to give athletes and coaches how to apply these principles in practice and what factors are of the utmost importance in terms of success and peak performance in sport.

There are two main groups of factors that we need to consider. Technical and human factors. Let’s take a look at the previous set of factors first;

1. Quality Preparation
The hard work of any sporting season begins with pre-season training which is very intense training. No one likes this season, because the work and training required is often very boring and painful. But it must be done so that athletes are optimally prepared for the rigors of competition. Stamina, strength, speed and skill size must be taken into account. Not only the amount of work done, but the amount of quality put in place in the preparation phase is also vital. When players cut corners and put drills at face value without their hearts or souls, it will show up later in the competition as fatigue, injury, or underperformance. Peak sports performance cannot be achieved under these conditions. Quality pre-season preparation is more important in youth sports.

Often in schools, sports seasons begin almost immediately at the start of the school year. With our children away for long vacations, our athletes often return to school for competitions with very little training time. Team play, physical fitness and mental preparation should take place within 2-3 weeks, which is almost impossible and impractical in the world of sports. This type of preparation also harms the growth of our children. In these circumstances, coaches and teachers (and parents where applicable) have a very important responsibility to ensure that our athletes are well prepared for competition. Sports training programs should be developed and implemented at the end of the previous year. Our athletes need to understand that their season does begin when their exams are over. At the start of a training program, coaches and teachers can also guide athletes on the training program while on vacation. Every athlete should have one that they can do something with to improve their playing skills while on school vacation. They can include things like maintaining a certain level of fitness through endurance activities like cycling, running, swimming or fishing and pitching in the yard with their siblings, or even individual practices to improve certain skills. The main thing here is to preserve and improve what was achieved in the previous season, so that the athletes do not go back to school and start from scratch. Simply planning and training in this way will ensure that sports teams are well prepared for peak performance in the sport later on.
2. Mastering Individual Skills
In all sports and games, there are specific skill sets and skills that are essential and essential. This needs to be accomplished by the athletes before they can play at a higher level later on. 6. Hold key positions in the team

In any sports team, there will be key positions to fill first. The rule in the basketball team is the team driver. He controls all the games. These key positions need to be filled first, even if it means removing someone from the position. I had a very talented and strong striker who likes to score goals. Unfortunately, I also have a huge goalkeeper gap and he also happens to be the best ballhandler on the team. After a lot of persuasion and sacrifice, he finally became a goalie. Thanks to their dedicated work, the team performed very well as very few goals were scored against us. This step was not easy. But as a coach I thought the goalkeeper was too important to allow any Tom, Dick or Harry to play, so he had to be the best. This result was the fewest silly mistakes in our goalie division that gave the team a much better chance of winning games, and it brings us to the last technical factor affecting peak performance in the sport – doing the fewest errors.

7. Reduce errors in games

In today’s sport, mistakes often determine the outcome of the game. The errors will be more numerous at the level of young people and children. The fact that children play at lower technical and tactical levels makes mistakes inevitable. The team with the fewest fouls in a match will usually be at their peak. It is a mentality that must be developed in the players to make the slightest mistake at the individual level as at the team level. If you don’t believe it, watch your next game closely to see how you score goals or points. Most of the time you will find that the goal was thrown through the fault of an opponent somewhere. Or that the point or the stroke is the result of some players feeling the ball. Making too many stupid mistakes will not lead to a team achieving peak performance in the sport. The team that works well makes the fewest mistakes. So, coaches, make sure you train your players to understand this and do the right things in the game. For some players, it is enough to set goals, whether as a team or individually, as the players themselves may already be intrinsically motivated. Regardless of the strategies, not getting the highest commitment and dedication from the players will mean that the training and match play will not be optimal resulting in poor peak performance in the sport.

When the team is able to work together at a level where the understanding of the players is very good, the team will reach the ultimate potential.
